Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Risk Factors and Prevention Tips

Hidradenitis Suppurativa also called Acne inversa is an autoinflammatory condition of hair follicles where there is formation of small, painful lumps under the skin. The lumps usually develop in the areas of friction like armpits, breasts, groins and buttocks. Formation of pus within the lumps causes abscesses. Abscesses may drain pus. Scarring may occur overtime. Sinus tracts may join these abscesses.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa usually appears after puberty 
Incidence is more common in women than men.
Black people are more affected.

Risk factors- 

Family history of Hidradenitis suppurativa.
Smoking 
Obesity
Fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone hormone

Complications-

Cellulitis 
Scars
Sepsis 
Fistula ( abnormal tract between skin and bowel or bladder) formation.

Treatment 

Use of antiperspirants to control excessive sweating.
Daily washing with antiseptic lotions.
Vitamin A can reduce inflammation.
Antibiotic therapy to treat infection when there is pus formation.
Birth control pills may be used to regulate oestrogen and progesterone hormone.
Botox therapy to control sweating.
Drainage when there is pus formation.
Surgery to remove sweat glands or sinus tracts.
Laser therapy.
Steroid injection to reduce inflammation.

Prevention-

Reduce body weight 
Use antiperspirants 
Quit smoking 
Use loose fitting cotton clothes.
